Installing hi-tech security doors, sensors and cameras is only one part of the task. Security breaches can still happen if security routines are not practiced religiously. Here are some home security routines to practice to bolster your home security.

Always remove keys from doors & windows

When you open or lock doors from the outside, remove the keys. Leaving the keys on the door from the outside after locking or opening the door gives anyone instant access into your home. You also run the risk of someone duplicating your keys and secretly infiltrating your home. You should also avoid dropping keys by the window as they can be easily seen and retrieved. Make sure the doors, windows, car, safe and outside buildings are locked at night, before removing the keys. Never remove keys without double-checking to be sure you have locked them.

Install & turn on outside lights at night

Lighting for the surroundings of your property is a great security feature to have. Outside lights help illuminate your property at night. Strategically place lights to illuminate dark corners or areas that are hidden from sight. Lights should be installed both within the property and outside of the fence. This helps to see anyone moving on the inside or outside of your property. Well illuminated properties deter burglars as there are no dark or hidden areas for them to move undetected. As part of your daily night routine, turn on lights as soon as night falls and it begins to get dark. Don’t wait deep into the night. Routinely check your lights to ensure all are functioning. Change dead bulbs immediately so as not to create dark areas at night.

Close doors & curtains at night

Whatever time of the day it is, make it a routine to lock your doors and close your curtains especially when you’re away. Begin to lock exterior doors as soon as night falls. In the case of a security breach, locked exterior doors slow down access into the main house and gives you more time to call the police for help. Also ensure you close your curtains or blinds at night to make sure thieves or someone secretly monitoring you over time can’t see the interior of your home and what properties you have. Closing curtains/blinds also prevents whoever is watching from knowing when you or anyone else is alone in the house.

Involve the whole family

Security routines shouldn’t just be for you alone. You should involve everyone in the family or whoever you’re living with. This is important for the times you might not be at home or times when you forget to do the routine. If you have kids, involve them and train them to practice these security routines.

Get an automated security system

smart security system

An automated security system can help you carry out all of your daily security routines. Many security systems can be programmed to perform the same actions at the same time each day – including arming the alarm system, adjusting indoor and outdoor lighting, closing the garage door, and locking all doors.

Integrating your security system with this functionality provides a comprehensive and convenient home automation solution. You’ll get more out of your security system while saving money on energy costs. Plus, with the time you’ll save in the evenings, you can focus on other, more enjoyable parts of winding down and relaxing from the day’s activities.
